Portfolio Tips

wouter Tulp

The most important thing about a portfolio is that it must be impressive. .. So, only include work that will amaze other people.

I need less than ten drawings to judge a person's talent, but I like to see dozens.

DIVERSITY:
I like to see diversity. Provide a wide variety of stuff, but don't include something just because it adds variety. Only include it if it's amazing.

Showcase what you excell at!  don't include work that shows your weaknesses or what you don't like to draw - even if its really good.

BE SOMEONE OTHERS LIKE TO WORK WITH

You can be a great artist, but if you just are not any fun to work with or are not a creative and uplifting influence on the rest of the team - all that talent doesn't matter.

It's advisable having a portfolio site that is JUST for your portfolio - not just a link to your blog.  that way you can be experimental with your blog but only put your strongest stuff on your portfolio.

Keep an eye out for nicely designed blogs or websites that showcase the artists work in a clean and user-friendly manner.
Caution: Don't compare your work to other students or classmates. your aim isn't to make your work as good as theirs - you should be aiming much higher - they arn't your competition - be VERY familiar with the top professionals in your field.  aim for the very best and study the very best.

also - think about pages from an "Art of" book.
