Flexibility to follow project style
This
skill is KEY when working in a production studio environment. One
of the biggest things that studios look for in character design
portfolios is the versatility of the artist. They will want to be
able to look at a portfolio and be assured that (whatever your
personal style) you could pick up on the design style of their
specific project and contribute in a creative and enthusiastic
manner.
Its
nice to be able to do things the way you like to do, but that's not
how it works in a studio. You need to be able to make yourself
enthusiastic about an art style that may be polar opposite to your
own preferences – AND BE HAPPY AND CREATIVE ABOUT IT – probably for a long period of
time.
Versatility
is Key
Versatility
within a medium – Digital: textured, flat, rendered
Versatility
across mediums
Versatility
in stylization – naturalistic to abstract
Stuff to consider when Emulating a specific art style
- Research –
- Become familiar with the look and feel
- Break down the characters. What shapes, lines, colors and features are universal or similar across the characters? How do they design the Guys different from the Girls, The Heros different from the villain
- Break down your own character. Is the character similar to any already done? What makes them similar/different. How can you imitate but still differentiate?
- How can you add unique features but have it fit in the world?
- Costume?
Extra Credit:
3 characters - 2 worlds - 10 pts
Part 1) Pretend
that you are on the design team of the production: Disney's Emperor's New Groove.
You have been assigned the Design of 2 characters (a Hero and
Sidekick) that will be added into the movie.
Part 2) Similar to above, this time you are inserting yourself as a character into the world of Disney's Hercules.
Integrate your characters into this world. REMEMBER to Include a character lineup of some of the production characters when posting your own character to show how well they integrate.
