SILHOUETTES
Silhouette thumbnails are a method used in character design that produces a large quantity of variations of concepts within a short period of time. This is a technique that us usually only seen by the artist or art director and less by a client. it helps the artist focus on shapes and designs that will make a strong impact on the viewer, and avoids getting caught up in details.
a silhouette thumbnail can be like a black outlined shape, like a shadow. sometimes shades or value can also be added to work on not just the outside shape, but also silhouettes within the shape. Search for dominant shapes that work well together. Often a chaotic and textured shape is easier to identify with and is more productive in letting loose and having fun. it allows a designer to produce striking iconic shapes that will stand out among multiple characters or creatures. Strong, interesting and easily recognizable silhouettes are especially essential in designs for movies or games.
